The colder months are right around the corner, and those cold months can result in harder times for some members of our communities. This sponsored post is really coming at a great time because I was just thinking about how I could teach Sophie what it means to be involved in the community and how we can help those in need. With Inmar Intelligence‘s “Ideas That Matter” campaign, I have the perfect opportunity to show her how we can do our part and get her involved from an early age! #InmarIdeasThatMatter
Although she is still young (2.5 years old), it is so important for me to be able to teach her this concept. I may not be able to control the type of person she will grow up becoming, but I hope that I can help shape her into a humble, kind and caring young women who will pause to think about those in need.
In Calgary, cold harsh winters are not a surprise – winters generally last over half the year and while we are fortunate enough to have a warm home and food to eat, not everyone is in the same boat. We recently learned about an amazing local organization – Inn from the cold.
They are dedicated to supporting families in the Calgary region that are or may become homeless by offering shelter, housing, and coordinated supports to help children and their families achieve independence. Below is a look at how they made a difference in 2020.

We decided to walk through this concept in a few ways.
First, we talked about sharing and how sharing makes us feel. We then talked about how everyone is different and not everyone is as fortunate as we are. We told her some little girls and boys may not have as many toys as she does and asked if she wanted to share her extra toys and clothes so that they can play and be happy too. At first she was a little hesitant and dismissed the idea. But after some more thought, she went and grabbed a few toys and books and said to give them to the little girl and boy so that they could be happy too.
We contacted Inn from the Cold to schedule a donation for some of our new items:
- clothes that were given but never worn
- baby food that were purchased and never used
- Gogosqueez applesauce pouches (they are a family favourite) – one of their most needed items
Due to Covid-19, they are only accepting new items, so we will be passing our gently used clothing and toys to some friends who are expecting, as well as dropping off the rest to a donation bin near our home.
I believe we can all make a difference, no matter how big or small. As parents, we want to teach our kids to do the right thing and make the right choices. We can help them understand these concepts by simply being a good role model and showing them what we can do.
How have you and your little ones talked about helping those in need? We’d love to hear more ways of how we can help them get involved in the community – share some of your ideas with us!
