Learning about our five senses is a great way to explore and learn more about the world around us. Did you know, adults have around 10,000 taste buds which are constantly regenerating every one to two weeks. As we age, their ability to regenerate decreases which is why our taste changes as we grow older.

Children are known to have closer to 30,000 taste buds. This means that they taste things way more intensely compared to us. Their taste buds are also more receptive to sweet foods vs bitter which attracts them to their mother’s milk.

Exploring a variety of foods and tastes at an early age can help them become more accustomed and open to the differences. This means less picky eaters!

Today we are focusing on the sense of TASTE through a fun taste test!

I picked one sample for each taste category:

  • Sweet – honey
  • Sour – lemon
  • Salty – pretzels
  • Bitter – Spinach (you can also use kale or any darker leafy greens)
  • Savory – soy sauce

We did a taste test of each and then talked about the different tastes.

You can download a copy of our taste test sheet at the bottom of this post.

We talked about which tastes she enjoyed and which she didn’t.
