This activity is easy to set up and can be extended into 3 different types of play – perfect for keeping your little ones busy and occupied while learning at the same time!

Play 1 – Pour to the line

To set up, simply tape around various jars or cups to create a fill line. You can also add a drop of food coloring into the bottom of the cups so that it creates color when they pour in the water.

Provide a small pitcher of water and have them pour to the line. This takes a lot of focus and practice. Your toddlers are likely used to pouring freeflow until there is no more liquid in their pitchers or no more room in the cups. With this activity, they learn to watch and look to see where the line is and control their body movements to stop pouring. They are learning so many different things with such a simple activity!

Play 2 – color mixing water

Now that your toddler has finished pouring into the cups, if you added food coloring to each cup, you should have cups filled with various colors. You can easily turn this into a color mixing activity by providing an empty cup or bowl and having your little ones explore by pouring a little bit of each color into the cup.

Pour or scoop a bit of yellow and blue to make green etc

Play 3 – water play!

Now that all the water is likely all mixed up and colors muddled, simply let them keep playing. Water play is a great sensory activity. You can add in toys, more bowls and scoops and let them practice transferring, pouring and splashing. Enjoy your tea/coffee while they engage in fun learning play!
